The Story Behind “Only I Can Hear”

Not every story begins with words.

Sometimes, it begins with a melody.

He approaches her and tries to make contact.

He asks if she can hear him.

She reaches for his hand and points to her mouth. Only in that moment does he understand: she was not unwilling to answer him. She simply could not.

The song was created from the idea that not every story can be spoken aloud.

Some people tell their stories through words. Others tell them through a melody, a movement, a look, a pause or the way they hold on to someone for just a second longer.

Their stories are not worth less because they are quieter. They are not empty simply because we do not immediately understand them.

“Only I Can Hear” is therefore not only about a woman who cannot speak. It is about all the stories people carry inside themselves but cannot easily put into words.

Sometimes the words are missing.
Sometimes fear stands in the way.
Sometimes the experience is too painful, too complicated or too deeply buried to be spoken.

And sometimes, a person communicates in a way we have never learned to recognize.

The song asks us not to judge silence too quickly.

Because listening is more than hearing a voice. It means noticing the small signs. It means remaining present when an answer does not come immediately. It means understanding that communication does not always happen in the way we expect.

Every person has a story to tell.

The question is not always whether they are able to speak.

Sometimes the real question is whether we are able to listen.

Not every story is spoken aloud. But every story can be heard by someone willing to listen.
